The Old T's opened up their league season with a trip to New Inn to play old foes West Mon. After heavy defeat at the same venue towards the end of last season, the visitors looked to show their true selves this time.
A confident set of plays from the first kick off saw hope for the visiting supporters but the T's struggled to get out of their own half. After continued territorial pressure, West Mon tumbled over after a 5m scrum. Still West Mon dominated possession, their heavy pack beginning to assert some scrum dominance. The pressure was visibly tiring the T's defence and a good offload got the home side in behind to stroll over for a second. To add to their woes, key flanker Peter Beecham was knocked cold in a tackle and taken off concussed. His tackling game will be missed in the next few weeks.
Finally the Old T's sprung to life and gained some territory and pressure of their own. A fine 45m penalty from Chris Davies put the T's on the board. Back in the game the visitors needed a secure restart and a punt back into the West Mon half to put the pressure back on. A shambolic play ensued instead giving West Mon the red carpet to another try and to pull away. West Mon added a bonus point before half time when their dangerous full back came into the line and offloaded for a try under the posts. HT 24-3.
Further scrum dominance gave the T's no platform at all in the second period. However, plucky defence with wing Dan Gethings and second row spoiler Craig James especially to the fore saw the T's restrict West Mon to only three more tries. An excellent offload by full back Morgan Griffiths coming into the line put hard working flanker Dan Went away late on but he was brought down well by the last line, his attempted offload was knocked on and the T's were to draw a try blank. FT 43-3.
