Some people think that the phrase "to give a hiding" comes from a colloquial verb "to hide"; meaning "beat, flog or thrash". Others assume it's got something to do with winning an animal skin or "hide" in the hunt.
Last Saturday, the T's offered an alternative source for the phrase. If clusters of players choose to "hide" behind a ruck, like midges in the shadow of an outdoor lavatory, then the team will lose.
No matter how hard other team mates try to compensate, they are on a hiding to nothing.
No hiding places this Saturday boys.
