T's hold Sarries down

A high ball in the 22, with a tall, fast winger on the chase can be difficult to defend. Not for our cover defence. Why not let the attack catch the ball, then smash him with a huge tackle the moment he lands?

Why not indeed? And this unconventional approach epitomised the T's exercise in damage limitation against confident league leaders Newport Saracens.

For example, it's often said in association football that 10 men play better than 11. Thanks to some misunderstandings on the side, we decided to experiment whether this applied to rugby football. In fact, we played nearly half of the game with only 14 men voluntarily.

Didn't seem to do us too much harm.

However, the biggest tactic was how we made use of the conditions. The half backs hoisted plenty of high balls, which Sarries struggled to cover with cold, wet hands and eyes blinded by floodlights.

Baz and Josh Smith had the times of their lives, pouncing on every Saracens knock on, dropped pass or fumble. In fact, with a seriously malfunctioning set piece, this was our main source of ball.

And when we did have the ball, we played our slow ball well, kept it tight and took our time. Our pace.

Best of luck for the Tref game tomorrow boys.
